With treatment of mesothelioma, there are several different methods which are primarily used with the intent of completely curing the disease.

These are the methods primarily for those with pleural mesothelioma:

Pleurectomy — This method is generally performed on those who had their disease diagnosed at an early stage.  This one attempts to remove all of the tumor from the patient.  Oftentimes, if it’s known that the whole tumor cannot be taken out without removing the lung, a pneumonectomy is performed at the same time.

Extrapleural Pneumonectomy — This is one of the most difficult forms of procedures, and when choosing to have this done, it’s important to choose a surgeon with good experience in this operation who also possess a great level of expertise.  This and other methods have recently been used more and more in combination with surgery as surgery has previously failed to help extend one’s life significantly. Some other methods in use now are chemotherapy, radiation, and newer ones like immunotherapy, gene therapy, and photodynamic therapy.
