For someone with cancer, sound nutrition pratice is completely different from what is normally considered to be such. Everything you may’ve previously been told or knew about nutrition can be different, and the foods encouraged may shock you. Normal nutrition recommendations probably recommend the inclusion of fruits, veggies, whole-grain breads, moderate amounts of meat/dairy, low-fat, etc. Whereas with cancer patients, nutritional focus is on high calories and protein intake. The inclusion of eggs, cheese, and whole milk in the daily diet, and adding sauces/dressings to meals is generally a common recommendation. It may be even encouraged to cook with more butter/margarine or oil.
So basically with cancer, high calories and protein intake is extremely important as this is what’s needed to keep bodyweight at a good level and keep patients from losing weight and lean body mass.
